In Mission to the Mesozoic, the player assumes the role of a photographer with the ability to travel to different time periods and analyze the various flora and fauna found there. Players are able to move back and forth between the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous periods. Success is achieved when the students are able to spot connections between the time periods and pinpoint relationships that connect plants, animals, or other environmental features.
